Reflecting Disability: Representation of disabled people in UK children’s books

The Reflecting Disability research is funded by the Arts Council England to explore the quality and quantity of representation of disabled people in UK children’s book for 3 - 11 year-olds.

The Reflecting Disability steering group would like to thank Arts Council England for making this important project a reality.

“We’re pleased to be able to continue our investment in this important project, which will help to ensure that all children see themselves and their families reflected in the stories they grow up with. It is encouraging to see how the publishing industry has welcomed the initiative, acknowledging the deep thought that has gone into the creation of the framework from the steering group of experts with lived experience of disability and neurodivergence. This investment in gathering a robust set of data will create a benchmark for the book world to build on.”

James Urquhart, Interim Director, Literature, Arts Council England
