Our lawful bases for the collection and use of your data

Our lawful bases for collecting or using personal information for research or archiving purposes are:

  • Consent - we have permission from you after we gave you all the relevant information. All of your data protection rights may apply, except the right to object. To be clear, you do have the right to withdraw your consent at any time.

  • Legitimate interests – we’re collecting or using your information because it benefits you, our organisation or someone else, without causing an undue risk of harm to anyone. All of your data protection rights may apply, except the right to portability. Our legitimate interests are:

  • Knowing how lived experience and research influences the representation of disabled people in UK children's books leads to better and more authentic representation. Authentically inclusive books lead to understanding and welcoming of difference, and benefits society as a whole in the long term. Asking book creators to share information that they choose to and feel is relevant to the representation in their books provides insight into how that impacts the representation. Additionally, it would be inappropriate for anyone other than the disabled person to share information about their personal lived experience, which is why book creators are given the option to share as much or little as they choose, or nothing at all. Participants are not obliged to provide this information, but are given the option to share what they choose.
